Abstract

The retractable work-piece support is for use on lathes or thread-cutting machine and centres a bar as it is being fed longitudinally to the machine station. The support is used in conjunction with a tubular bar-guide (5) and takes up movement between the bar (W) and the guide (5) to reduce the noise caused by the workpiece rotating within the guide. The support may retract to permit the passage of the thrust-bar as it follows the workpiece bar (W) through the guide (5). The pad or bit (1) in contact with the bar (W) may be demountable. Several such supports may be used at longitudinal intervals along the guide (5). An adjustable jack-powered (3) slide (2) may support the bit (1) which enters a radial opening in the guide (5).
