Abstract

Photosensitive elements are made contg. a photoconductive insulating layer comprising a glassy alloy of selenium and 0.1-14.5 atom % germanium. The element pref. also contains 10-10000 ppm of a halogen, esp. 50-5000 ppm Cl or I. Pref. photoreceptive elements are comprised of a support coated with a thin layer of the glassy selenium-germanium-germanium-chlorine photoconductive compsn. and covered with a layer of an organic charge-carrying material. The elements are useful in Xerographic printing processes in which the element is electrostatically charged and exposed in the usual way to form a latent electrostatic image. The selenium alloys exhibit an increased resistance of the selenium to crystallise, while the addn. of germanium increases the glass transition temp. of the selenium and increases the resistance to deformation e.g. under roller pressure in copying machines. The addn. of germanium also allows deposition of the alloy under vacuum at below the transition temp. of the alloyed glass, which gives less faults in the coating.
