Abstract

Process comprises passing a protein soln. though an ion exchange resin. The resin comprises a porous mineral support of 4 mu-k mm particle size, 5-150 m2/g specific surface, 500-2500A degrees pore dia., and 0.4-2 ml/g porous volume. The support is coated with 15 mg/m2 of a cross-linked polymer film contg. or bearing either anion exchange groups which are tert. amines or quaternary ammonium salts or cation exchange acidic groups. The exchange capacity is 2 m equiv./g. The process is used to separate protein from solns. such as lactoserum, beer, blood, body extracts and industrial effluent from abattoirs, the feed and starch industries, providing a purification means for these effluents. Cellulose or dextran ion exchangers used to separate protein are unsuitable for use in a column, undergo volume changes due to ionic force, are biodegradable and cannot be sterilised. The above having none of these disadvantages can be used to obtain very pure protein.
