Abstract
In a cable-type cored sampler, comprising an inner tube (i) within an external tube formed by a pipe string supporting a drilling bit and (ii) equipped at its lower end with a core extractor sleeve and with a head at its upper end suspended from a cable for its extraction and optionally for lowering the inner tube, whereby (iii) this tube not only possesses a suspension lug resting during drilling on a ring for suspension of the external tube but also has locking means engaged during drilling in an annular notch for locking this outer tube, (iv) the tube forms a water passage running from top to bottom in the external tube for the admission of a stream of water delivered by a pump on the surface to the drilling zone for cooling the drilling bit and for discharging the drilling debris from the bottom to the top between the outer tube and borehole wall, the improvement whereby (a) the head of the inner tube has an adjustable water flow control valve, operating as a result of the pump above a predetermined water pressure indicated at the pump and at least equal to the water pressure, difference between the underground water level and the level of the surface pump, when the depth of drilling and coring exceeds this underground this underground level or at least equals the pressure due to the water level difference between the bottom of the borehole and the level of the surface pump when the depth of drilling and coving do not reach the underground level, in such a way as (b) to remain closed during the lowering of the inner tube in the outer tube until it reaches the lug on the head of the inner tube and locks this in the locking notch (c) to be subsequently opened for coring as a result of a pressure increase - shown at the pump to be greater than the above-mentioned pre-determined pressure and (d) to be reclosed finally after coving as a result of a decrease of that pressure caused by stopping the pump, so as to unlock and raise the inner tube together with the core sample. The provision of the control valve at the head of the inner tube enables the rapid wear and/or destruction of the drilling bit due to deprivation of water following plugging caused by clay strata, to be avoided.
