Abstract

Pellets of carbon black are formed in a device with a hollow cylindrical shaft inside a cylindrical shell. Liquid is injected from holes in the shaft and mixing is achieved by pins protruding from it. These are uniformly spread over the surface of the shaft and extend to close proximity to the shell inner surface. The pins are located on an irregular helix which extends along the shaft. The spacing of adjacent pins is controlled by the equation P= (360 degrees/z). t where P is the posn. of individual pins, a is the azimuthal angular posn. between axially neighbouring pins and t is the axial spacing of neighbouring pins. all pins have a constant axial spacing (t) and only the azimuthal posn. is varied along the course of the shaft. The system gives good and rapid mixing after direct injection of pelletising fluid. It produces small uniform carbon pellets and the shaft has short stable, rigid pins.
