Abstract

The lever (12) of an automobile brake is moved in the direction of the arrow (13) in order to apply the brake. The housing (9) contains a self-adjusting device which compensates for the wear in the brake linings. As the linings wear, the shaft, which carries the profiled disc (6), rotates in a counter-clockwise direction. With a new brake lining, the part (7) of the profile is just clear of the stop (8). As wear increases, the part (6) approaches the stop and when contact occurs it is necessary to replace the brake linings. The position of the parts (6, 7) in relation to the stop (8) gives an indication of the amount of lining wear that has taken place.
