Abstract

Removal of excess coating material from the surface of one or more filaments emerging from a coating bath comprises contacting the filament tangentially with a series of roller surfaces turning counter to the filament movement, so that the rollers remove the excess material progressively. The rollers are continuously wiped, pref. after conditioning to a wet state by turning through a trough of the coating liquid after contacting the filament(s) and before contacting a scraper. The wiping rolls are covered with sleeves of silicone rubber of 40-50 degrees C Shore hardness. The roll wiping blades are made of silicone rubber or of PTFE, mounted on a pivoted or sprung support which can vary the force with which the wiper impinges against the roll. Method is esp. for controlling the amount of bonding agent, e.g. resorcinol-formol latex, applied to silicone resin filaments for e.g. tyre mfr. Various parameters can be adjusted to control the degree of wiping applied to the filament(s), viz roller speed, filament tension, filament speed, filament deflection about the rollers, offering fine control.
