Abstract

Parent patent describes an automatic sharpening machine for knives of root-cutting machines, notably those for slicing beets prior to their treatment in a sugar refinery. Prodn. is limited because the knives to be machined must be introduced manually. The addition provides automatic charging of the knives to the sharpening machine, one after the other on to a carriage. This is brought into the machining position opposite the milling cutter and the sharpened knives are then discharged automatically, one after the other. The machine comprises a knife-holding carriage, which runs on a slide, and takes a knife from the magazine. The knife has a zigzag cutting edge and the notches on the horizontal comb correspond to the zigzag in the knife while the jack raises and lowers a tool which presses the zigzag edge of the knife against the milling cutter. A chute brings the machined knives to a container. Another jack under the magazine, pushes the individual knives horizontally between the jaws of the carriage, at the start of the sharpening process.
