Abstract

The laser may operate with a solid, liquid, or gaseous medium. At least a part of the surface envelope bounding the laser medium has large depressions with smooth surfaces, as compared with the wavelength of the laser radiation. The depressions are arranged in a defined geometric pattern, in order to prevent total reflections of the natural fluorescent radiation. If a solid laser medium is used the depressions (20) are provided on the laser rod (7) surface. In case of a liquid or gaseous laser the inner and outer side of the laser medium containing vessel are corrugated. The housing of the entire system is preferably light reflecting. It may be filled with a laser radiation absorbing fluid.
