Abstract

The region to be scanned is divided into a small number of segments pref. three. The scan takes in turn the first line from each segment, then the second from each, and so on. (Thus in a 15 line scan divided into three segments, the lines scan in time sequence 1, 2, ... 15 appear in space sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, 13; 2, 5, 8, 11, 14; 3, 6, 9, 12, 15). By so directing time successive probes in widely different directions, the risk of picking up stray echoes from a previous one is reduced. The method is applicable equally to rotating and to fixed scanners.
