Abstract

Bottles filled with a liquid beverage are moved along a conveyor while each bottle is simultaneously rotated at high speed about its longitudinal axis. Upstream of a detection station the bottle rotation is abruptly stopped so that the contents continue to rotate while the bottle is moved by the conveyor through the detection station. Within the detection station a beam of light is shone into the bottle and stationary photoelectric detectors sense light scattered from the bottle contents. A control circuit monitors the output of these detectors and produces a 'reject' signal when coincident signals are generated by each detector indicating the presence of foreign matter within the bottle. Bottled beverages may thus be examined for the presence of foreign matter e.g. glass fragments or cigarette ends. Use of multiple detectors ensures that 'reject' commands are only given in response to the presence of foreign matter within the bottle.
