Abstract

Solns. contg. Hg are purified by sorption of the Hg onto a highly basic anionic exchanger (I) in the presence of active Cl at 20-40 mg./l. (I) has a matrix of a porous 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine (II)-divinylbenzene (III) copolymer. Pref. the process is carried out with movement (periodic or continuous) of (I) countercurrent to the soln. to be purified, and removal of spent (I) while adding an equivalent amt. of fresh (I). Used esp. for purifying waste waters from electrolysis cells or aq. sublimate solns. The presence of active Cl increases the dynamic capacity of (I) up to =44wt.% for Hg. Sorption cycle times can thus be increased, Hg concns. of =0.005 mg./l. in the effluent are achieved and the Hg is more easily recovered for re-use.
