Abstract

Hydroxamic acids of formula (I) are new, together with their salts: (where n is 0 or 1; R1 and R2 are H or alkyl; or R1CCR2 form an opt. substd. opt. unsatd. ring opt. contg. one or more heteroatoms; R3 and R4 are H or alkyl). Cpds. (I) are broad-spectrum antibacterial agents for human and veterinary medicine for admin. orally or parenterally, or for sterilisation of equipment. A pref. cpds., 2-(N-hydroxycarbamoyl)benzoic acid is prepd. by addn. of finely powdered phthalic acid (0.1 mol.) to a stirred soln. of hydroxylamine (0.125 mol.) in methanol at 0 degrees C.
