Abstract

Hexafluoropropanone-2 is prepared by contacting hexafluoropropene and O2 with a fluorinated Al2O3. Hexafluoropropanone-2 is a catalyst for the polymerisation of perfluorocyclobutene and triazine. It forms a terpolymer with tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene. It is a starting material for the prepn. of Bisphenol AF (C6H4OH)2C(CF3)2 , and an excellent cross-linking agent for fluorine-contg. elastomers. The present single-stage process is highly efficient and the intermediate 1:2-epoxy hexafluoropropane is not formed, contrary to the known two-stage process. Pref. the catalyst contains 0.5-50 wt. % and it may be prepared in known manner by treating an activated Al2O3 with an (in)organic fluorinating agent, e.G. SF4, SF6, CF4, CF3CF3, etc. The contact is effected at 80-300 degrees C, pref. 100-250 degrees C/0-20 atmos. pass, for up to 30 mins., 1 sec- 10 mins. being sufficient for temps. of 100-250 degrees C.
