Abstract

Coating is applied to a hollow metal object. Method comprises (a) An undercoat consisting of a material suspended in an aqueous medium is sprayed onto a certain area of the outer surface of the object. nb) An electrophoretic coating is then applied to the rest of the surface. (c) A finish is applied at least to the areas which will be visible. (d) The coating is then stove hardened. (e) The undercoat applied by electrophoresis is applied with completely hardening the spray deposited undercoat. (f) after (b) the object is fired in order to harden, at least partly, the layers which have been deposited. (g) Stoving is carried to harden not only the finish but all previous layers which have been incompletely hardened. The coatings are applied to automobile bodies. Since the coating applied after stage (a) does not have to be completely hardened, lower drying temps. may be employed. Also the fumes which are evolved from this low temp. drying doe not usually have to be treated. The films have good corrosion resistance.
