Abstract

In a desorption process using a stripping column, consisting of a vertical column with a number of mobile perforated plates installed at a pre-determined distances above each other, which may be made of deformable material e.g. rubber and be connected below each other to make at least one continuous perforated strip, at least one surface of the plates being periodically cleaned mechanically and/or chemically, the effluent to be purified being supplied to the top of the column at the base of which air, steam, or any other gas mixtures free from impurities and at a suitable temperature, is blown upwardly, while the column is supplied laterally which calcium hydroxide at one or more levels, the ammonia liberated at the top of the column as well as gas or vapour expelled that the base of the column being collected, the improvement whereby the calcium hydroxide is added in the form of milk of lime with a concentration (weight of CaO) >=30%. Not only is ammonia stripped out more efficiently but a number of substances which could not be removed by steam are decomposed to steam volatile materials and thus removed.
