Abstract
Extn. of juice from sugar cane comprises a wet milling process. The installation uses several mills in series through which cane pulp is passed. Between each pair of mills the pulp is passed through a soaking tank to take water/juice liquor before the next milling operation. The discharge roll of each mill but the last now delivers pulp directly into soaking liquor without. Exposing the pump to air. The liq. at the discharge roll of each mill is, pref. mainly composed of juice extracted by the inert mill but one downstream, supplemented by juice from the next mill downstream. The liq. at the discharge roll of the penultimate mill is mainly make-up water supplemented by juice extracted in the final mill. Juice for subsequent processing is derived from the first two mills of the series. All mills but the first pref. comprise a fourth main roll feeding pulp into the conventional, three-roll arrangement and opposed by the conventional, small packing roller. Extracting juice from sugar cane by milling. Since cane pulp is no longer exposed to the air between mills, air does not become trapped between pulp fibres and impede the dissolution of sugar. This results in an improved extraction rate.
