Abstract
A filtration system for sepg. particles from a gas comprises: (a) a compartment contg. a deep filtering element formed by a mass of fibres, (b) a pipeline with a fan, valves, etc. for passing the gas loaded with particles through the filtration compartment at a surface speed >9:1 m per minute, so that the particles collect on the surfaces of the fibres as well as between them, forming agglomerates of matl. in the filter element, (c) vibrators fitted to the filter element frame for detaching the accumulated masses of particles from the fibres, and a fan to blow a current of cleaning gas across the compartment in the reverse direction to that of the flow of gas to be filtered. The system further comprises (d) timing devices and control equipment for changing over the compartment between a phase during which the particle loaded gas is passed through the filter and the particles are removed from it, and a phase during which the flow of loaded gas is stopped and cleaning is undertaken by vibration simultaneously with the circulation of the cleaning gas, so that the agglomerated particles released from the filter fall to the bottom of the compartment, and (e) a conveyor, such as a worm, by which the accumulated mass is removed. Since the deep filter is cleaned repetitively and that the gases move at a high speed, the system is smaller than conventional filtration systems with strainer sacks, etc., but has the same capacity. Because it is smaller it is cheaper and since fibres can be used which are resistant to heat and corrosion, the system can be used for gases which are very hot and/or highly corrosive, and which conventional filters could not handle. The system covered has a capacity of >=170 cubic metres per min.
