Abstract
Prepn. of aromatic amines comprises reacting an aromatic cpd. having >=1 free posn. with hydroxylamine in presence of a redox system comprising conc. H2SO4, an aliphatic carboxylic acid and FeSO4. The prodts. are useful as intermediates for dyes, insecticides, antioxidants and rubber additives, and in the photographic field, etc. The process can be applied to all kinds of aromatic cpds., including those with strong electron-donor or -acceptor substits., and can be controlled (by adjusting the acidity) to give either ortho/para or meta substitution. In an example, reaction of anisole with NH2OH in presence of FeSO4, 100% acetic acid and 50% H2SO4 gives anisidine with an o=m=p ratio of 29.7:3. 1:67.2. Increasing the H2SO4 concn. to 96% gives an o=m=p ratio of 15:27:58.
