Abstract

The cooler (18) is supplied over a flexible hose (17) from an external source of cold (e.g., liquid nitrogen); it cools an interchangeable probe (7). The temperature is regulated at the required level by a temperature sensor (24) in the probe controlling a heating element (9) through a control circuit (4). A switch (22) controls an electromagnetic valve (6) over a time relay to shut off the flow of coolant and bring the heating element (9) into operation. This switch is operated by the surgeon if the probe sticks to the body tissue. The apparatus provides controlled temperatures within the range -20 to -196 deg.C.
