Abstract

Colouring process for sand, gravel or stone chips used, e.g. in asphalt-based roofing materials, comprises forming a solid in the surface pores of the mineral, from a pigment/alkali silicate mixt. (I) without severe heat treatment. Adhesion is improved by chemically fixing organosilica cpds. followed by coating with organic polymers. The pigment may be (in)organic. Solidifying of (I) is pref. at -10 degrees C. to +120 degrees C. and is pref. produced by the action of an acid (II) or salt which does not give basic reaction prods. The reaction prods. obtd. pref. improve fixing of the organo-silica cpds. (III). (III) are pref. specifically reactive to the polymers used for final coating. A suitable acid (II) is HCl. Alternatively, NH4Cl may be used. Suitable organosilicon cpds. are: e.g. amino-tri(alkoxy) silanes if an epoxy resin is to be used for coating, and mercapto-tri(alkoxy) silanes if S-crosslinkable polymers are to be used.
