Abstract

Prodn. of 2-mercapto benzothiazole comprises heating benzothiazole with sulphur, pref. in approx. equimolar amounts, at above 200 degrees C. The reaction may be carried out in presence of 0.1-2 mol. H2S per mol benzothiazole. Prods. are used as vulcanisation accelerators for rubber. Good yields with high purity are obtained, without use of aniline. Reaction is pref. carried out in an autoclave, for 2-6h. at 220-280 degrees C, under the pressure developed by heating.
