Abstract

Glass plates or dishes are made by pressing a gob against the top surface of a die, so the gob spreads out to form a flat blank. The core of the die is then moved w.r.t. the outer part(s) of the die so the central portion of the blank sinks to the required depth. The molten glass pref. sinks in the die due to gravity, and the pref. die consists of a ring surrounding a moving piston. The top surfaces of the ring and the piston are provided with contours used to achieve the profile required on the underside of the glass plate or dish; and the piston is lowered to suit the depth desired in the plate or dish. The ring and the piston may both move and travel at the same or different speeds in the same or different directions. Used for gravity moulding of glass objects, where one die set can be used to provide plates or dishes with various required depths.
