Abstract

The grapple has an automatic clamping operated by the wt. of the suspended article. The grapple comprises a stirrup-shaped frame with a lever pivoted on the end of each downward branch. The levers have hooked or forked ends facing each other to form a clamp which closes as the levers swing downwards and opens as the levers are returned to an upper position by counterweight or spring action. A guide is provided to aligh the clamping faces as the levers swing up and down. When the clamping faces take yhe form of hooked ends, the hooks can be overlapped and superimposed to slide upon each other in a controlled path. Forked clamping ends, which part completely as they open can be guided relative to each other by extending a slide bar from one fork to engage a guide passage on the other fork. Used mainly as a quick-action grapple for an overhead conveyor, partic. for poultry to be carried by their feet between poultry houses and collecting vehicles. The automatic clamping makes positive attachment of an article and subsequent removal very easy and quick. The construction is simple, inexpensive and easy to clean.
