Abstract
At least part of the starting material of a cast stainless austenitic steel contg. ferrite is deformed plastically by >=10% and is then given a recrystallisation heat treatment to refine the cast structure. The casting pref. contains 5-40% of ferrite. Pref. the prods. are cast centrifugally. The steels so treated are resistant to intercrystalline corrosion, are not subject to surface undulations when formed, and can easily be inspected ultrasonically.
