Abstract

Curable liq. epoxide gp. -contg. graft copolymers are made by reacting (A) 30-80 wt. % of a liq. epoxide cpd. with >1 epoxide gp./mol., a viscosity of 15-14000 cP at 25 degrees C and an epoxide equiv. wt. of 120-450, dissolved in an inert solvent with a b. pt. of 60-150 degrees C, with (B) 70-20 wt. % of a mixt. consisting of (a) 2-10 wt. % 3-5C ethylenically unsatd acids or anhydrides; (b) 50-90 wt. % acrylic esters of 1-18 C aliphatic satd. monoalcohols, (c) 5-25 wt. % monohydroxyalkyl esters of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. acids with 3-5C in the acid residue and 2-8C in the monohydroxyalkyl gp., and (d) 3-20 wt. % (meth)acrylonitrile, where a+b+c+d=100% and A+B=100%. The reaction is carried out at 60-150 degrees C in the presence of a free radical catalyst until graft polymerisation is complete, after which the solvent is opt. removed under reduced press. at 130 degrees C. Prods. are stable for several months at 40 degrees C and are compatible with known epoxy resin hardeners. They cure at relatively low temps. to solvent- and weather resistant coatings. They contain no solvent and therefore cure without polluting the atmos.
