Abstract

Reproduction is prevented in female warm-blooded animals by administering in or before the reproductive age a nonapeptide of formula (I): L-pGlu-L-His-L-Trp-L-Ser-L-Tyr-X-L-Leu-Arg-L-Pro-NHEt (where X is the divalent optically active D-form of tryptophan, tyrosine or phenylalanine) for >=1 day in the period before the female produces one or more mature ova or after ovulation has occurred. (I) are physiologically safe and prevent fertilisation by inducing premature ovulation, by inhibiting implantation of fertilised ova before they become attached to the uterus or afterwards to cause abortive action on te embryo. In animals (I) may also be used to synchronise estrus in a herd etc. Dose is 0.02-10 mg./kg daily in humans for several days following merses or after ovulation.
