Abstract

A sheet of fibres is made starting from a melt fed onto the top of a disc rotated by a drive unit underneath the disc. The disc converts the melt into fibres blown by a current of air into an annular stream flowing past the drive unit and then spread out into a sheet. The annular stream of fibres is sepd. by a jet of gas to form an open stream into which a binder is injected from one or both sides to form the sheet. In the pref. plant, the melt is fed down a pipe onto a spinning disc surrounded by a ring of air jets which produce the annular stream. A slot jet then feeds a thin jet of gas in the opposite direction to the stream to "cut" or separate the fibres, which flow along a guice channel past injectors supplying the binder. Used esp. in the prodn. of rock wool starting from molten silicates, where the plant permits the easy injection of binders into the stream of fibres.
