Abstract

The vehicles safety belt reel has an outer casing (1, 2) enclosing a drum (9) provided with a helical track (10). At one end of the drum is an annular piston (7), its inner diameter having dogs meshing in the helical track. Behind this is a pyrotechnic charge (18). In a collision, a detector generates an electrical impulse which fires the charge and drives the piston along the helical track. This piston, operating in straight guides (5), causes the drum to rotate and tighten the belt. Simultaneously, pawls (13) engage a gear at the end of the drum and hardened balls (17) drop into recesses to lock the drum.
