Abstract

1335807 Energy absorbing reel for vehicle seat belt FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 30 March 1972 14949/72 Heading A3V An energy absorbing reel for a motor vehicle seat belt comprises a spring load spindle 11 for winding belt webbing 13 in a housing 10, an inertia locking means 14 in the form of an inertia member 17 carried on a helically screw threaded member 16 on the spindle 11 which member 17 lags rotation of the member 16 and is axially displaced into locking engagement with a clutch 18 on accelerated belt withdrawal, and a deformable member in the form of a metal strip 19 fixed at its inner end to a hub 15 on which the clutch 18 is mounted and formed as a spiral coil outwardly of two abutments 20, 21 on the housing 10 so that when the load on webbing 13 exceeds a predetermined value the strip 19 is wound on to the hub 15 and absorbs energy in the process. Instead of the inertia locking means shown, a retractor type locking means may be used. Instead of the locking means 14 being attached to the spindle 11 and the deformable member 19 to the housing 10, the deformable member may be attached to the spindle and the locking means to the housing.
