Abstract

The optical scanning system employs a laser light source (1). An optical deflector (3), receives the light from the source and provides a coherent beam with an optical axis lying along one of several predetermined directions. The selected optical axis is determined by a control signal supplied to the deflector (3). This has a pre-recorded hologram (6) and provides a read-out beam focussed on a given point along the optical axis of the read-out beam, depending on the optical axis of the coherent beam. Pref. the deflector (3) comprises an acousto-optical transducer receiving a variable frequency control signal to determine the direction of the coherent beam.
