Abstract

Prepn. of 3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1,4-dione (I) comprises subjecting beta-isophorone (II) to liq.-phase oxidn. with O2 or an O2-contg. gas in the presence of a base and a metal catalyst. The catalyst comprises Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag or Pt. opt. deposited on a support. Cpds. (I) can be converted to trimethylhydroquinone, which is an intermediate in the synthesis of vitamin E. The process gives comparable yields to the process of FR 2253730 (e.g. 81-100% conversion and 43-77% selectivity) in shorter reaction times.
