Abstract

MnCl2 is made by lixiviating >=1 oxide compsn. of Mn with CaCl2 or MgCl2 to give MnCl2 in the liq. state. The process avoids the problems associated with formation of gaseous MnCl2 (corrosion etc.). The prod. is esp. useful for prodn. of Mn metal by electrolysis. Generally the oxide of Mn (Mn3O4, Mn2O3, MnO2, manganese minerals etc.), is fused with CaCl2 or MgCl2 and other alkali(ne earth) chlorides at 300-1200, esp. 500-1100 degrees C, to give MnCl2 as a soln. in the molten salt compsn. Pref. silica and/or alumina is added to the compsn. to form silicates and aluminates with the CaO and MgO present, which lowers the reaction temp.
