Abstract

A metal melting furnace consists of a horizontal drum which can be reciprocated and receives the charge at one inclined end from a vertical shaft. A burner injects a flame at high temp. and velocity at that end so that the charge is molten by a heat shock and flows into the heating chamber. Contact with the hot walls increases the melting rate still further. Such a furnace requires a minimum of heating chamber area and of overall furnace dimensions. Independent of the type of material, a high throughput is achieved by the combination of heat shock with reciprocating rotation.
