Abstract

A thermal insulating system for a prestressed concrete pressure vessel, intended for contg. an evaporating fluid, comprises two cylindrical rings or jackets one in the upper part of the vessel and the other in the lower part; the upper ring is closed by a top cover and the rings are of different diameter, are lined with metallic thermal insulation and form an annular chamber outside them and inside the concrete pressure vessel wall. This chamber contains liquid up to the height of the liquid surface of the reactor coolant and contains gas above this level; the overlapping of the two ring surfaces of differing diameters constitutes a liquid seal of cold fluid. The upper ring contains the upper row of gas outlet penetrations while the lower ring contains the lower liquid inlet penetrations; the rings are so mounted from the vessel wall as to permit radial expansion and have deformation-accepting seals at the penetrations through the wall. The arrangement is considerably simpler than the previous system in which there was a single ring or jacket in the insulating system.
