Abstract

Filters for tobacco smoke consist of a filtering tube made from paper corrugated in the longitudinal direction; the paper contains 5-50% by wt. of thermoplastic olefin polymer pref. high density polyethylene or polypropylene, fibres. The fibres may be 1-10 mm long with a specific surface area of 5-70 m2/g and the paper may contain sulphite and/or sulphate pulp. The paper may have additional particles, e.g. of carbon, bonded to its surface by the olefin polymer fibres. A continuous length of the filter tube is subsequently cut into short lengths to form filter tips. The original tube, or the individual lengths, are heated to soften the fibres and bond the whole assembly together. The filter tip contg. the thermoplastic fibres shows a lower press. drop and improved hardness is compared with the corrugated paper used hithto. There is the added advantage that particles, such as activated carbon, may be bonded, by heating, to the fibres without the need for an auxiliary adhesive.
