Abstract

Modification of the tooth form in this design infinitely variable gearbox extends the life, increases smoothness of operation and reduces noise of the transmission. The speed change mechanism is of the type where a pile of discs (9) may slide axially on a shaft (10), rotation being prevented by teeth (13) registering in splines (11) on the shaft. The flanks of the teeth (8, 13) on the discs (9) and rings (2) are shaped so that in section they form an obtuse angle down the centre of the tooth face, convex outwards. Preferably the angle is of order 172 deg. and allows a rocking motion of the discs and rings relative to the shaft axes during speed changes. This additional freedom eases the axial sliding of the discs and rings on the splines. It is alos advantageous to chamfer (16) the top edges of the teeth and arrange for the top face to have a slight angle of order 4 deg to the axial direction.
