Abstract

Hydroxybenzonitriles (I) are prepd. by ammonolysis of alkyl hydroxybenzoates (II) (where R = 1-4C alkyl) by passage of a gaseous mixture of (II) and NH3 over a boron phosphate catalyst at 200-600 degrees C. The molar ratio NH3:(II) is pref. between 1 and 300, esp. 5 and 300, and the contact time is pref. 0.001-10 min, esp. 0.01-2 min. (I) are intermediates for herbicides. In an example, a catalyst of 100 ml boron phosphate, 0.2-0.4 m particle size was placed in a vertical tube, heated to 350-370 degrees C and NH3 and ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate in a molar ratio of 17 passed through with a contact time of 50 seconds. Yield of 4-hydroxy benzonitrile was 93%.
