Abstract

A lens comprises a first layer having a surface configured as an echelon lens and a second layer of a clear polymeric material having extending across its thickness linear opaque louvres. Pref. the louvres extend at an angle to the direction of the echelons of the first layer. The second layer may be backed with a plain clear layer or a layer having an outer surface also configured as an echelon lens. Pref. polymers are cellulose acetate butyrate or propionate, a methacrylate, a polycarbonate, a polysulphone, or PVC, and a preferred pigment for forming the louvres is carbon black. The lens has a minimal moire pattern and excellent contrast due to the absorption of background light. The lens may be of use with light emitting diodes, nematic crystal devices or cathode ray image magnifiers.
