Abstract

The graphite is treated with fused alkali, esp. NaOH then with a soln. of sulphuric acid and then with a soln. of HF and HCl. It is finally washed several times with the acid mixed haloacid soln. Other acids may be added to the H2SO4 and/or the haloacid mixt. according to the nature of the impurities to be removed. Pref. the alkali fusion step is effected in a special steel cupola at 1200 degrees C for 90 min. Nitric, trichloracetic, fluoroboric, phosphoric and perchloric acids are used as additives to the mixts.
