Abstract

1389209 Removing SO 2 from gases ROHM & HAAS CO 20 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970 22 Nov 1971 6 Dec 1971] 59080/71 Heading B1L A macroreticular cross-linked, oxidation-resistant, heterocyclic nitrogen, ion-exchange resin is used to remove sulphur dioxide from gases before venting them to the atmosphere. If the gaseous mixture contains sulphuric acid mist and/or SO 3 this may be removed by pretreatment with ah ion-exchanger. The regeneration of the SO 2 absorber is usually by heating but an alkaline chemical treatment may be used from time to time. The nitrogen-containing heterocyclic monomeric precursors exemplified are vinyl pyridines, quinolines, isoquinoline, pyrimidine, pyrazine, triazine pyrano pyrrole, indoxazine, benzoxazole, quinazoline, naphthyridine, pyrido pyridines and acridine and these can be cross linked with a large list of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Sulphonic acid and quaternary ammonium groups may also be included in the resin.
