Abstract

A reed of a loom is operated by a rotationally oscillating crank arm connected at a pivot to a connecting rod attached pivotally to the A first weight is attached to the crank arm diametrically opposite to the pivot and a second weight is mounted on an extension of the connecting rod. The size of the weights and their distances from the pivot are given by the formula (m1A+nm2A) and (m3C + nm2C) where:- m1A is the equivalent mass of the crank arm with respect to the pivot; m2A is the connecting rod with respect to the pivot; m3C is the equivalent mass of the reed with respect to its pivoting pivotal connection to the connecting rod; and m2C is the equivalent weight of the connecting rod with respect to its pivotal connection to the reed; and n is the number of connecting rods. Inertia forces set up in the reed drive mechanism are maintained in equilibrium, thereby providing smoother operation of the reed.
