Abstract

The battery charging circuit continuously monitors the potential difference between the batterys terminals when the latter is in the process of being charged. When this potential exceeds a first preset voltage, the charging current is switched off. When it falls below a second preset voltage the current is switched on again. In normal circumstances the charging process therefore continues in a series of pulsations whose duty factor decreases as the batteries voltage increases. The circuitry which does this consists of a Zener diode in series with a potentiometer across the battery; a transistor coupled to the potentiometers slider and controlling a transistor switch.
