Abstract

Primary and secondary unsatd. alcohols are oxidised to the correspn. acids using an alkali metal (per)halate or hypohalite and RuO2 or A2RuO4 (where A = alkali metal cation) as catalysts. The process is esp. useful for the prodn. o chrysanthemic acid from chrysanthemyl alcohol. Pref. catalyst combinations are NaIO4/RuO2 and NaIO4/Na2RuO4. Pref. process for oxidn. of chrysanthemyl alcohol is carried out in aqs. alkaline medium using NaIO4 and RuO2.
