Abstract

Triazine derivs. of formula (I) are new (R1 is CH3 or C2H5; R2 is CH3; R3 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R4 is 1-4C alkyl. X is Cl NR5R6 or SR7; R5 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R6 is 1-4C alkyl; R7 is 1-4C alkyl). They are prepd. from cyanuric chloride by sequential reaction with a 2-hydroxy-2-alkylnitrile and NHR3R4, then opt. HNR5R6 or R7SH. (I) are herbicides for total or selective use, e.g. selective weed control in cereals, oilseeds, potatoes, peas etc. or total control of algae and aquatic weeds in canals etc. At lower doses they are growth regulators generally increasing crop yield and protein content while reducing plant size. They do not persist in the soil so sensitive plants can be grown the following year on treated ground. A pref. cpd. 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-(2-cyano-2-propoxy)-s-triazine is prepd. by reacting 100g cyanuric chloride and 71.1g 2-methyl lactonitrile to give an 83-87% yield of the 2,4-dichloro cpd. which on reaction with EtNH2 gives a 96-98% yield of prod.
