Abstract
The housing (B) for the safety belt is fixed to the bodywork. Inside is a cylinder (1) containing fluid and a spring (3) holding a piston (4) and rod (2) which forms a dashpot carrying spring loaded cams (8). On each side pivot fingers (9, 10) grip the belt buckle when introduced. These are normally released by pressing buttons (14) either side. In an accident, the piston is pulled back in the dashpot, fluid escaping past a seal (5). The cams ride over pins (13) on the fingers. As the fluid is metered back (15) by return spring pressure, the cams disengage the buckle from the fingers and another spring (21) releases it.
