Abstract

Novel high polymers for the prepn. of contact lenses able to be worn continuously over long periods of time are obtd. by (a) mixing 40-60 pt. N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone with 35-40 pts. wt. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and 10-17 pts. wt. 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate to form a soln. Process further comprises (b) adding to the soln. (a) 0.2-0.5 pts. wt. maleic acid dially ester and 0.1-0.5 pts. wt. of a polymerisation initiator; (c) stirring the soln. to dissolve the components and produce an intimate mixture; (d) heating the soln. in a mould to effect its copolymerisation; (e) cooling the product obtd. and (f) removing the product from the mould. The polymers are transparent, have high hydrophilic props. and moderate elastic flexibility. They have excellent O2-transmitting power and water-absorption. They may be worked easily and with precision in any machines used for the manufacture of contact lenses.
