Abstract

Shafts, screws, bolts and similar metal parts are mass produced with high mechanical strength and very close dimensional tolerances, by forging round blanks obtd. by drawing and grinding. The blanks are coated with a lubricant resistant to heat and forging stress; and are then heated and precision-forged to obtain dimensional tolerances of 1/100th of a mm. Heating prior to forging is pref. below the transformation temp. of the metal or alloy used. The blanks are pref. first treated mechanically by shot blasting or descaling, and the lubricant is pref. a solid suspended in a polymerisable resin and sprayed onto the blank followed by polymerisation. Forging pref. produces both a head on the blank and a shank dia. suitable for thread formation; the forging is heat treated and cold thread-rolled. The forging process is used to mfr. e.g. Ti alloy parts for the aeronautical industry, where very accurate dimensions are required.
