Abstract

An appts. for extracting an irradiation capsule from or inserting it in, a combustible assembly incorporates a tubular body in which are a central tube, an operating tube and a mechanical system for moving vertically the tubular body and the central tube. The tubular body can be brought to rest on the combustible assembly. The central tube has at its end a part which can be brought into contact with the head of the capsule and carries grips. The operating tube brings about the freeing of the capsule in the assembly. It can be joined, by a system of balls fitting into grooves, to the body when the capsule is totally in the assembly or to the central tube when the capsule is held by the grips. The mechanical system consists of a manually controlled screw-nut system, operated by a handle turning the nut. The nut cannot move vertically so that its rotation causes the screw to rise or fall. The screw is connected to the central tube and the system can bring about successive vertical movements, in opposite senses, of the body and the central tube when the central tube is in contact with the capsule, for insertion, and when the tubular body rests on the assembly, for extraction. The operating tube can follow those movements and open or close the grips and free the capsule. The appts. incorporates an electrical detector which shows when the tubular body comes to rest in the assembly and an indicator which shows the position of the capsule in the assembly.
