Abstract
New L-amino acid mixts. for parenteral or oral use consist of essential and non-essential L-amino acids. Each 16 g of total amino acid nitrogen is made up of: 620-750 mg L-isoleucine nitrogen; 950-1220 mg L-leucine nitrogen; 1900-2250 mg L-lysine nitrogen; 480-600 mg L-methionine and/or L-cysteine and/or L-cystine nitrogen; 220-440 mg L-phenylalanine nitrogen; 700-800 mg L-threonine nitrogen; 210-450 mg L-tryptophan nitrogen; and 650-1000 mg L-valine nitrogen. The solns. are intended for oral or parenteral nutrition, e.g. after surgical operations or in diseases such as kidney disease. Using the amino acids in the proportions indicated above gives prods. with surprisingly high nutritive values. The new solns. have nutritive values of 148-155 after oral administration and 138-146 after parenteral administration. This compares with 137 for orally administered potato-egg protein mixts. and 130 for parenterally administered mixts. basedon potato-egg protein mixtures. In an example, an amino acid infusion soln. contains (per litre) 6.34 g L-isoleucine, 10.44 g L-leucine, 9.65 g L-lysine, 0.50 g L-cysteine HCl, 5.34 g L-methionine, 4.66 g L-phenylalanine, 6.16 g L-threonine, 1.60 g L-tryptophan, 7.48 g L-valine, 8.91 g L-arginine, 3.16 g L-histidine, 4.12 g glycine, 8.97 g L-alanine, 12.44 g L-serine, 6.36 g L-proline and 4.43 g L-tyrosine.
